I am an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (UP). I am the current director of the Master's Degree in Network and Information Systems Engineering at this Faculty.

I do my research at LIAAD (Laboratory of AI and Decision Support), which is a research group belonging to INESC TEC. I am also part of the current directive board of LIAAD.

My research revolves around the general area of Data Science, with a strong focus on Predictive Analytics. Recently, I've been focusing my work on modelling rare events, with applications to fraud detection, prediction of extreme values and monitoring activities for anticipating anomoulous behavior. My favourite data mining tool is the R environment and my book "Data Mining With R, learning with case studies" by CRC Press, has been received very well by the public.

I am a founding partner of KNOYDA, a company devoted to training and consulting within data science using the R environment.

I am also one of the fouding partners of OBEGEF an observatory of the economy and managment of fraud.

I have a degree in Systems and Informatics Engeneering from the University of Minho, and a PhD on Computer Science obtained at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. If you wish you may have a look at my full curriculum vitæ.
